Hyundai Repair: vss cant find it, first models, hyundia

i have an 03 tibuon with an i-4 and 5 speed manual trands, my friend replaced my clutch for me while at his school. while the tranny was out someone bumped it and it rolled onto the vss.  It was crushed he got me a new speed sensor, but it didn't fit my car. the sensor does not plug into the lead on my car. the plug on the one hyundia sent my friend looked something like this
[---] but the lead on my car is triangular not rectangular.  I do have one of the first models produced for the 03 model year and i am aware that the transmission changed midway through the year.  Could i need another sensor besides the one listed for 03 i went to a dealership thats fairly new and the parts guy wasn't a big help.

It sounds like you have the sensor for an automatic.  Parts people often have trouble getting these right because the sensors are located in different areas of the catalog depending on which transmission the vehicle has.  Of course that's no justification really; it's their job to know that sort of thing.

The part number for the gear if you need it is 43624-39001.  The proper part number for the sensor will depend on your vehicle's production date:

From 10/1/01 to 11/1/01, use 96420-37000.
From 11/1/01 to 1/22/02, use 96420-2D500.
For 1/22/02 and later production, use 96420-4A600.
