Hyundai Repair: Rear Brake Repair, wheel hubs, parking brake cable

Question
Hyundai Accent GL 2002, how do I replace my rear brakes?

Answer
Since you've got an Accent, I'll presume you have drum brakes.

You'll need to remove the wheels, the drum retaining screws, and the drums.  If the drums won't pull over the shoes, you may need to remove the console inside and adjust the parking brake cable looser so you have more play.

Once you have the drums off, remove the dust caps and remove the wheel hubs.  This will allow you good access to the shoes.

At that point, how you proceed is usually a matter of preference.  The task is little more than "simply" removing the springs and clips which hold the shoes in place and then reinstalling the new shoes with the old hardware.  I use quotation marks because while what you need to do is rather straightforward, getting it done isn't.  If you've never replaced drum brakes before, I'd recommend having someone on hand who has as a mentor who can guide you.  This isn't a very good job to try to learn on your own while doing it.  It's easy to not get something exactly right.

Once you have the wheel hubs off, only work on one side at a time.  That way, if you have trouble remembering how something went together, you can look at the other side.

When you've got the new shoes installed, you'll need to adjust them.  There's a star wheel on one of the rods that moves an adjuster screw in and out.  You'll want to adjust this so that there's just a little resistance (i.e. the brakes are just barely touching the drum) when you turn the drum or wheel.
