Hyundai Repair: check engine light, trouble code, auto zone

Question
Hi, i just purchased a used 99 sonata. It seems to be in great condition mechanically and cosmetically.  The check engine light came on yesterday and has stayed on.  Im told not to worry about it, can mean a number of things, and none of them being of real importance.  I have carfax report. No previous problems.  It was a rental.  Thanks for any help...

Answer
While it's true the check engine lamp can mean any number of things, some of them are of significant importance.  You should at least have the trouble code checked so you know the nature of the problem.  Places like Auto Zone have advertised they'll check the trouble codes for free.
