I recently changed the oil in my wife's 2001 Elantra GLS and she said it started having troulbe starting it.  Then a couple weeks later she said she had to flutter foot it to keep it running.  Now she is saying she can barely to get it to start.  After it has run and you try to start it again it will start just fine, but after it has sat for a while it is very difficult to get started.  It also has trouble going when you press on the accelerator after sitting for a while.  What could be the cause of this?  I have tried gas additives to help clear out the injectors, but this has not helped.

Answer -
Is the Check Engine light on?

Follow-up question:

No, the check engine light is not on.

Answer -
OK, it could be any number of things but the most common cause of this problem is a leaking fuel pressure regulator. It sometimes has an internal leak that will cause a fuel pressure drop and leak excessive fuel into the intake manifold.

Follow up question:

How difficult is it to check a fuel pressure regulator?  Is that something I can do or is it something I should have a professional do?

Answer
The regulator is on the passenger side of the car on the fuel rail. It is threaded in to the rail. Very often when I see someone attempt to replace one on their own I see the car on a tow truck with a broken fuel rail. I would have the car checked by a pro. It may cost more to fix but it will usually save money in the long run.
