Jaguar Repair: The lovely XJ6 - Power Window fix, wd 40, auto parts stores

Question
QUESTION: Howard,

I would like to offer a tip here for others, and ask a question as well. I hope you do not mind, and I appreciate your input on both. I had a left rear window that would not open, but I could hear "clicking" inside the door when the button was pressed and knowing there are no relays there, I assumed the mechanism was stuck. I found it quite easy to remove the door trim, take the regulator loose of the door and yes, verify that the motor when free of the regulator spun freely. A shot of brake cleaner followed by WD-40 at every pivot point of the regulator, and cleaning and re-lube of the teeth resulted in a smoothly operating regulator. Now - the ugly part is re-installing, and here is my tip for others - I appreciate any feedback you have:
Set the regulator to about halfway - engage the arm to the window rail, then pull the window by hand all the way up closed, and suspend with a piece of tape - maybe heavy masking tape, to the doorframe. Now, you may use the switch to rotate the regulator to the fully closed position, which should bring it roughly in line with the bolt holes in the door. The hard part is lining up the holes in the plastic lining with the regulator, but once one screw is in, it all falls in to place. On lesser cars, I'm tempted to tear out the plastic, but not here! Now, for my question. I can see some signs of leakage at the front of my rear diff. pinion seal. Old leakage, but I still imagine it could use a topping-off of gear oil. Any suggestion on a trick to get gear oil in to the rear diff while installed in the vehicle? It doesn't appear to be as straight-forward as turning up a bottle with a hose, as on my Land Rover!

Thanks!

ANSWER: Hi Michael,

Thanks, good tech tip on the rear window regulator.

On the gear oil into the differential, I use a small pump that came with a plastic bottle of gear oil. I don't remember what brand oil it was but I have seen them recently in auto parts stores so it must be common on other cars. You just pump it into the level plug.

QUESTION: Howard,
I have been searching online, with no luck - what was the MSRP of the series III XJ6? Do you recall, or have a resource? Just curious...

Thanks,
Michael

Answer
As best as I can remember it was $40+ K. Most Jag dealers that were in business then should have either something in writing or someone who remembers. I do remember that there were almost no add on options as all of the US versions came with the full package. I do remember that the Euro version could be had with a straight stick gearbox and no AC or sun roof if you wanted it that way. I seen one from Canada once.
