Jaguar Repair: 1984 XJ6 fuel tanks, fuel tank repair, radiator shops

Question
Howard,
Hi again, My Jaguar recently developed the problem of pulling fuel from one tank, dumping to another. I have read your previous answers on this topic, so I have direction what to do, but I wasn't using my right tank at all because it leaked and this prompted me to finally address that issue. I have all but removed the right tank and easily found a small hole near the rear of the tank, close to the seam, and planned to take it to one of many radiator shops in town who advertise fuel tank repair as well. When removing the filler cap tonight, I found a disgusting amount of rust visible inside the tank, and removed the left filler cap as well to find the same in the left tank. My question is do you have knowledge of whether this can be effectively removed by the typical processes employed at such shops? Just thought I would ask if you have had experience having such work done. I very much think at this point that I should go ahead and pull both tanks and have both cleaned while one is being repaired (and possibly head-off similar impending failure of the left tank). Thanks again for answering questions!

Answer
Hi Michael,

If you read how the system works you can see that it is possible to transfer fuel when you get a failure as the failure can also have a valve stick as well as just stop working.

Ask the radiator shop if they can clean rust out of your good tank too. Most that I have used can do that. It would be best to do both.
