Jaguar Repair: 1982 XJS, chevy conversion, 350 chevy

Question
I am seriously considering the purchase of an XJS from the original owner, with only 62,000 original miles on it. It is in good condition, the only thing holding me back is that when I took it for a test drive it was having serious problems shifting into third. The engine would over rev quite a bit before the tranyy 'jumped' into third. Any ideas on what the source of that late shifting problem might be?

Answer
Hi Cheryl,
I am not a automatic specialist but if that is the only problem you may have either a band adjustment or a valve body problem. That transmission is a GM400 and most any automatic transmission shop can work on it. It is not something you can fix.

You should let a automatic transmission shop give you a estimate before you purchase it. The price can be small or very large depending on what is wrong.

Nice car but expensive to maintain and they have a drinking problem
(gasoline).

They do make a great 350 Chevy conversion car. (good fuel mileage, strong and cheap to maintain.)
