on 85 xj6 when shold the vent in cal be open to draw air inside car.

Hi Jim,
Fresh air enters the car at all times. The AC/Heat decides where to rout the air. There is no time that just fresh air is routed into the car without heat or AC. Only the Euro version brings fresh air into the car without heat or AC and that has nothing to do with the cal vent. It comes in the vents just over the outside head lights and enters the car by kick panel vents (which are not installed on US cars.)
