Jaguar Repair: 1986 XJ6 4.2L, wet test, compression tests

Question
QUESTION: I just purchased a 86 XJ6.  The engine runs very rough and there is a lot of smoke coming out of the exhaust.  It looks like oil is dripping from the connection between the front two portions of the exhaust.  Also, I have a lot of oil coming out of the right rear of engine from somewhere.  I ran a compression test the following way:  unplugged the coil, removed spark plug one at a time, cranked the engine 4-5 times, read meter, replaced and moved on.  Calling the front cylinder #1 I received the following:  25, 110, 110, 125, 105, 105.  I placed oil in the front cylinder and it increased to 35.  I did not depress the gas during the test and of course the engine did not start without the coil plugged in.  The car drives nice and other than the oil and engine miss it is in great shape for a 22 yr old car.  Thyanks for ant advice.  Al

ANSWER: Hi Al,
Your compression test was useless as you didn't open the throttle during the tests. No air in, nothing to compress. Although the #1 cylinder says you need to first check valve clearance on #1 and If you have clearance, you need a valve job (at least)
Retest all the cylinders with the throttle open then do a "Wet" test on all cylinders not just #1. To see if you need rings too.
Also if you have been running it like that, you probably need both CATs now. I can't see the oil leak from here so you are going to have to wash the engine an then watch to see where the oil is coming from. Also, when you run the compression tests, disconnect the small leads on the coil on either side. If a spark jumps down the coil tower to the primary, you will need a new ignition module too.

QUESTION: I am still playing around with my 1986 XJ6, thanks for the answer to the last question.  I am having a problem with my power windows driver and passenger left side and moonroof.  The drivers windown is stuck in the down position and the passenger didnt work when I got the car (the rear control for the back window doesnt work either.  I was having the same problem with the left side windows and took the switches apart and cleaned them and now they work, but as soon as they started the right side quit (I HATE LUCAS!).  Are there any in line fuses?  It seems funny the entire drivers side window and roof quit as soon as the others started.  If not, any suggestions on how to manually raise the drivers window?  Thanks, AL

Answer
Hi Al,
Go to my web site and copy the window diagram and you can see how it is wired and thus test each section. You will note that thermal breakers are used in place of fuses and thus easy to test with a test light or ohm meter. The two breakers are located on the lower right side of the Aux fuse panel under the passenger's dash. The motors can be tested by removing the door panel and apply a power and a ground to the motor and reverse the leads to run the motor in the opposite direction.

Only the sun roof can be operated manually by a small crank handle accessed in the trunk.(One crank supplied with each car)
