Jeep Repair: 1989 Wrangler Not Starting, starter solenoid, starter relay

Question
QUESTION: It stopped starting, the small terminal on starter solenoid was cracked so I replaced the whole unit (cheaper). Now it sounds like the solenoid is trying to engage but the starter does not spin. Is there any kind of interlock that may be keeping it from starting?
Thanks

ANSWER: No i and pretty sure that it is stright foward on the 1989 year. Are  you sure that everything went back together in the right order and are you sure that the solenoid is the right one for your jeep, sometimes they can look right but the insides can be backwards than what yours needs.

QUESTION: Eric,

Yeah, I am pretty good with cars and work on VIP aircraft as well. I bought the starter with the solenoid attached (cheaper). It did start once in a blue moon, could it be the starter relay? What is the best way to ck, i did verify the red hot was providing 12V to relay.

ANSWER: what does it sound like when you are trying to start? does it sound like the battery may be low? or is it like it doesnt do anything and then it just fires right up? if so then yes you maybe right in looking at the starter solenoid, or even sometimes if its a stick you can check the sensor on the clutch peddel...

QUESTION: Whe there is action I hear what sounds like the solenoid. The battery is fine, crossing the gap on the power and ground wire on the starter and it turns fine. It is a stick, where is the sensor for the clutch petal, although it has started in neutral.

Answer
as for the Clutch petal switch. basicly as im sure you know on almost ever car ever made you have to have the clutch in to start the car, sometimes that switch gets hit or moved out of the way and makes it hard to start. It should be located just above the petal really not hard to find as i remember but i have not worked on an 1989 in a while. I would try that, but it still worries me for the fact that you said you can jumper it and it starts fine.... that tells me that that part is bad. im really at a loss, i wish i could help you more or i was there to get my hands on it, but from here i dont really know what more i could tell you, if you still have questions i could send your question over to another expert and see if they can help you better.
