QuestionMy daughter just called and said that the engine in her 99 Beetle is knocking, so she pulled over and checked the oil, to which there was none registering on the dip stick. She added 2 quarts and indicated that it seemed to help with the knocking sound. Is that possible, or is it more likely a bigger problem?

In short, the answer is Yes. If there isn't enough oil for the oil pump to get to the rest of the engine, the engine will start to knock.
