Volkswagen Repair: 1999 VW Beetle, 2 quarts, computer crash

Question
My daughter just called and said that the engine in her 99 Beetle is knocking, so she pulled over and checked the oil, to which there was none registering on the dip stick.  She added 2 quarts and indicated that it seemed to help with the knocking sound.  Is that possible, or is it more likely a bigger problem?

Answer
Hi there Esther;  sorry for the delay, I had a computer crash, and am using the machine at work temporarily.
In short, the answer is Yes.  If there isn't enough oil for the oil pump to get to the rest of the engine, the engine will start to knock.  Get it changed, put a new filter on it, and keep a closer eye on it in the future.  That's about the best thing to do.  Good luck, Esther.  Sorry again for the delay.
