Jeep Repair: play in steering box, adjustment nut, steering box

Question
Thanks for your replay to my previous question... You were dead on- the steering box has play.  It has an adjustment nut on top.  Can it be tightened safely?  If so;How much is too much?  Will I do any damage?

Answer
Hi Tom,

Normally this is a safe procedure, since I have limited information regarding the condition of your steering components I don't want to speculate about how safe it is. If you have any reservations about doing it or safety concerns I would recommend you take it into a shop and have it done. It shouldn't cost very much. You may also find this might not correct the play in your steering. A worn out steering gear is still worn out in spite of a little tweaking.

You shouldn't have any abnormal resistance at the steering wheel after an adjustment is made. Such as the steering wheel not returning after cornering

As far as damaging the steering gear. Normally not but like I said, with limited information I can't say.

Hope this helps,

Kenji
