Jeep Repair: 04 jeep cherokee heater/ cruise, jeep cherokee laredo, jeep cherokee

i bought a 04 jeep Cherokee Laredo a month ago. it has two problems that i am looking for a way  that i can fix them. the first is the heater. the heater fan blows really well but it will not change positions. it is stuck on the defrost position. the indicator knob will turn just fine to all positions but something inside is not connected or connecting to switch. i have heard that it could be and electrical thing or vacuum i am not sure what it is. I think of myself as somewhat mechanically inclined and i would like to attempt to do this myself but i do not know where to start so i am looking for some ideas of where to start or what to look for??
the second problem is cruise control. the indicator light on the dash will turn on when i push the on button but when i push the set button nothing happens i have tried several times to turn it on and tried varied speeds but nothing will engage and the speed will not lock it just acts like nothing happened. what can i do to localize the problem and fix?

both issues are related   one fix and U are on your way. open the hood and on the driver side look at the brake master cly and there is the intake manifold look below the brake lines and u will see a  vac line that has come off the port. U might haft to cut a bit off to make it fit tight and stay on.
