Jeep Repair: 99 Jeep G. Cherokee wont shift right, transmission work, rpms

Hi my check engine light recently came on. Now when I drive my jeep it sometimes is having trouble changing gears. The other day it tried to change gears and nothing happened. I tried to press the gas to accelerate but the mph and rpm just kept dropping. Then the rpms shot up and I was able to accelerate again. Then the next I was going about 35 mph and the car just shut off and I was forced to pull over. What do you think the problem could be

Any number of things.  WIth the check engine light being on that means there is a fault code stored in the computer.  I don't really do alot of transmission work so I don't know that retrieving the codes and giving them to me would do us any good.  Regardless, when it comes to transmsissions you don't want to keep driving the car if it's acting up.  Additional damage could result.
