Jeep Repair: Crank case leaking through shifter, crank case, shifter boot

Question
Hi,

I've got a '94 Wrangler.  On my way home today oil started leaking out of the shifter boot onto the floor of the car.  I took off the shifter boot and access panel and it looks like it may be coming right up arround the stick shift.  Is this a repair I can do my self?

Thanks,

Morgan Earley

Answer
Your transmission has a vent somewhere to relieve pressure that builds up inside of it.  I would guess it is plugged and the pressure is trying to come out around the shift lever seal.  To answer your question, it depends on whats wrong with it but for the most part, transmissions are better left to those that specialize in them.
