Jeep Repair: rear axle, lug bolts, amc 20

Question
How are the axles kept in place? I have taken off the brakes and diff cover. I removed the bolts behind the brakes. I am not 100% but I think it is a dana 20 in a 81 CJ-5.

Answer
If your Jeep is stock, it probably has an AMC 20 in the rear.  The axles are held in place via the backing plates that bolt to the axles flanges that also hold on the brake backing plates.  Remove the four bolts that hold all that together and they will slide out with the aid of an axle puller. I use a chain attached to a couple of lug bolts and use a whipping action to jar the axle loose from the housing.
