Hi Nigel,

Yes the keyless was working before the new battery and no its not cranking and it could be stuck in alarm mode the red light is on in the middle of the steering wheel

It sounds like it is stuck in the alarm mode.  Look for water contamination in the security locking module.  This also sometimes happens when the engine ECU loses its security code causing it to come out of sync with the security module.  It would be helpful to have the codes read to steer you in the right direction.
