Land Rover Repair: 2004 Freelander Diagnostic Codes, 2004 freelander, pre purchase inspection

Question
Hello John,
I recently purchased an 04 Freelander with high miles (108k).  Withen days the engine started having issues.  It struggled to get up to speed and was only able to do so in a lower gear at very high rpms.  Also, it could not exceed about 50 mph.  I brought it in to the dealer where he said some of the coils were bad.  He replaced two of them and the car was fine for about two weeks.  I started seeing this problem again and brought it in.  I assumed the other coils were going bad since it had the same symptoms, but he said the codes were different.  He also said he had no idea what the codes meant.  The codes are the following:  1775, 1605, 1470, and 1472.  I believe the 1470 and 1472 codes are nothing to be alarmed about, but I have no idea about the other two.  I hope you can help, thank you very much!

Answer
Did you know you can Google each of these codes and get a general answer as to what they mean?  I am sorry to say you probably have a truck that has a number of problems, all of which will cause bigger trouble if ignored.  You have codes for the variable intake manifold (a common problem) an internal transmission problem (also common) and engine fuel trim/misfire issues (common).  If you have all those codes in the engine control unit I'd guess there are also codes stored in the car's other computers but you will need a LR dealer or shop with an Autologic ot T4 system to read them.

My guess is that this truck was put up for sale because it needed $3-5k in work, and you are the lucky recipient of that.  That is why you should ALWAYS do a pre purchase inspection at a shop qualified to find issues like these before they become YOUR problems.

I'm sorry if that's a bleak outlook, but there are no "meaningless" fault codes, and yours point to several problems.  What that tell me is that this vehicle has been neglected a long time and these issues piled up until someone dumped it on you.  Maybe I'm wrong, but that's what my years as a service manager tell me about that set of codes.

Best of luck to you despite that.
