Land Rover Repair: window regulator cable, drive pulley, brake cables

Question
'03 Freelander rear passenger window regulator cable frayed. I purchased cable replacement kit, but it has no instructions. I have been able to route the replacement cable through the regulator.  I had to remove the motor from the regulator in order to replace the grooved drive pulley that fits on the motor.  My problem is how to keep the cable wound properly on the pulley while attaching it to the motor and the bracket that the motor attaches to.  Actually, I was able to get it onto the motor while still wound properly, but not when I attempted to attach motor to the bracket of the regulator.  Also, I'm not sure how tight the cable should be. Your help would be greatly appreciated, and I hope I have adequately explained my issue for you.  Thanks in advance, Dan

Answer
Hi Dan,

Strange that the kit did not come with instructions...must have been from the dealer. :)

I recall a couple of threads from a Freelander site that might be of help to you.  These guys discussed the kit option for both the Freelander passenger window and the tailgate window.  The cable fraying is apparently a common problem and these guys were able to repair it with just simple bike brake cables.   If I remember correctly, they discuss cable length and tension and may even more tips on the install since I last read those threads.

Here are the links to these threads and I think they discuss the installation methods as well:

I suggest you bookmark these sites and even JOIN them as they are excellent resources for LR owners like us!

As a bonus, here's a link to a website that has the COMPLETE workshop manuals for your Freelander.  Its a zip compressed file of a PDF document.  Well worth downloading this 590MB file - and do it quickly before the link is removed.

The Freelander workshop manual has the calibration steps needed when you finish your repair.

I wish I could do more for you.  I don't own a Freelander but my wife has always wanted one.  I'm a big guy (6'2") and I likes my Disco!!!  Loads o'leg room.  :)

Try those links out and I hope they help answer your questions.
