Land Rover Repair: LR DISCOVERY 1998, johannesburg south africa, bush trips

Question
Hi John,

I'm one of the unfortunate's who insists on owning Land Rover's.

I'm currently rebuidling a Classic and have a '98 Disco 1, 3.9 with about 150k kms on the clock.

My home is near Johannesburg, South Africa and I use it as an off-road vehicle only - in other words it's my toy and I've got all the equipment to be relatively self-sufficient when my wife and I undertake bush trips.

I don't believe that the Disco is delivering the sort of performance that it should and I'm wondering if you have any advice on how to improve this.

Besides the simple things like plugs etc. - are there any other causes of performace loss? I've read that sticking valves may contribute.

Thanks a lot,

Mike

Answer
The most common cause of performance loss is the camshaft - the lobes wear flat and you lose lift.  That would be the first place I'd look once basic fuel injection setup and timing are ok.

Good luck with your repair.
