Land Rover Repair: 2000 Range Rover 4.6 HSE, mass air flow sensor, mass air flow

I recently found a 2000 Range Rover 4.6 HSE for sale in the paper for $1800, I go and look at it and am told that it will not turn over, he was told it was a starter, but after installing a new starter it still will not turn over. The SUV is in great shape and I would like to buy if its an easy fix. Do you have any idea what could be holding her back from turning over? Thanks!!

Hi Bryan,

could be a good purchase but be warned and aware that LR parts are very, very expensive.  The problems associalted with non-starts range from fuel pump failure, fuel pump relay, coilpack (no spark) or ECU failure ($2500).  

IS the starter at least attempting to turn the engine over?  Do you hear just a clicking noise or is the engine turning and just not igniting?    Clicking noise....could be starter or starter solenoid,
no ignition (combustion) - could be no spark, no fuel or both.  No spark - coilpack needs replacement; no fuel - either pump or pump relay has failed.  ECU controls both spark and fuel by various sensors - Mass Air Flow sensor (air fuel mix), crank position sensor can also prevent starts.

All that I have mentioned can be replaced by a DIY'er who has worked on engine before.  Not too complicated BUT parts are expensive.

Go with your instincts:  determine if spark is present, if so, determine if fuel is present.
