Land Rover Repair: code p1179, mass air flow, o2 sensors

Question
Hey John,
long story short about a month ago check engine light came on in my 1998 range rover. The rover is running fine.  Took it to auto store the scanner came up with "passed no codes".  Then did a tune up check/change spark plugs, oil and transmission fluid, filters the works. Have always done own maintenance. Check engine light goes off and the rover is still running good. 2 days ago check engine light comes on again, this time got p1179 code.  auto store wants to sell me new O2s. any suggestions?  sorry for the long story long.

Answer
Hi Myka,

Your question is quite clear and succinct.  Don't think its O2 sensors, P1179 is Air Meter Fuel Control maximum reached.  I suggest you remove the Mass Air Flow (MAF) from your Rangie and clean it with CRC MAF cleaner.  Make sure to do this with the MAF removed from the engine and allow it to dry throughly before reinstalling it.   Advance Auto may have CRC cleaner and I know Autobarn does:

If you still get CEL (check engine light) and the P1179 then you'll have to consider replacing the MAF.  I was told recently you can find a salvaged MAF for about $70.  New ones can be found for about $200 with core exchange on the internet.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
