Hi I am planning to buy this 2003 freelander, the engine has knocking sound. what could be the reason and how much can it cost to fix it...

I'd suggest you proceed very, very carefully.  And engine knock could mean an internal failure, which these Freelanders are sort of infamous for.  A new engine will run $7500.  Then again, it could be some trivial problem.  Have it checked by a professional before you bid.
