Land Rover Repair: engine cranks, but it does not start., camshaft position sensor, crankshaft position sensor

Question
We have a 97 Discovery SX, 4.0 V8 - Facing start problems. It does respond to ignition, meaning the engine cranks, but it does not start. Occasionally, it DOES start. Random. No check engine light at all. Battery is fine. Good spark. Fuel is coming in well. OBD II scan shows no codes at all. All ok.
We have a feeling it "could" be related to the crankshaft position sensor but since it's hard to reach, we have not yet removed it to test. Should we get a code if the CPS were failing? Any input?? Thanks!

Answer
A vehicle with good spark indicates a good crank sensor, at least when cold and at start up. Check the fuel pressure, it should be around 35psi. If it has overheated, check the cylinder compression. If they are good, spray easy start into the air intake. If it starts, go for a fuel pump.  If it does not start, I would try the crank sensor.   The camshaft position sensor rarely fails and usually brings up codes when it does.
