Our Land Rover Discovery 1 V8 1996,it does not want to go forward it only reverse.My husband was changing the gear the small gear for moutain climming.Can you please help us.

If your Discovery goes back but not forward there is almost certainly a problem in the transmission.  The only other thing to look at is the shift cable - sometimes the cables break and you can't engage the gears properly.  But if you feel each of the detents as you move the lever, and there is still no forward, you have a 1st gear failure in the transmission.

In New England that would be a $2-4,000 issue.
