Land Rover Repair: 99 Land Rover Discovery, land rover discovery, factory test

Question
When we get into the car sometimes it will not start but instead when you turn the key in the ignition to try to start it up,  the horn will blow from the alarm.  We usually will wait about 10 to 15 mins to try to start it up and it will start.  We also noticed when we lock the driver side door with our key, the alarm lights will not flash anymore.  Alot of times when we are outside, we can hear a clicking noise from the car.  We were told by speaking with a guy in the Land Rover parts and service department, it sounds like the switch needs to be replaced.  Which he quoted us about $500 dollars.  With the economy going the way it's going, money is very tight but we still love and need our Rover.  Is there any cheaper way to get this problem fixed?  Please respond ASAP, thank you.

Answer
Outside of replacing the driver door latch yourself to save labor, there are no savings to be had on that job.  And I would not recommend trying it yourself unless you are truly qualified for that kind of work.  They are probably telling you a new driver door latch is needed.  You need the factory test system to know for sure.  We change alot of those latches here, especially in winter.
