my freelander just stopped the other day in the middle of the road i checked all plugs were sparking and fuel was getting through but wouldnt start.thought of head gasket but no loss of coolant.got it home now no spark at plugs so now thinking of ecm can i fit a second hand unit and will it run any help appreciated thanks

Answer
You cannot fit a new ECM without the LR test system to code it to the vehicle.  In fact, if you disconnect the existing ECM, you may need to tow the truck to someone wih a T4 or Autologic to reset the security before it will run.

Chances are the ECM is not the problem anyway.  It's more likely a crank sensor trouble, or a security problem, or something else.  You can try a crank sensor, but beyond that, you really need a proper test system to see what's missing to keep the motor from starting.

You might look at the shop list on www.rangerovers.net to see if there is a properly equipped independent near you if you want an alternative to the dealer
