Land Rover Repair: Disco 97 V8 not starting, spark plug wires, engine management system

Question
Hi - A recurring problem i have on my 97 disco V8 is that the engine will turn over but just wont fire.  I can hear the fuel pump buzzing away, theres fuel in the tank, battery is fine.  Ive pushed the fuel cut off switch on the fire wall but still no joy.

IS this a common problem ? any ideas on what it could be ?

Appreciate any help you can offer.

Thanks
Mike

Answer
Hi Michael,

common problems with difficult starts are EMS sensor faults, old spark plug wires and plugs, inadequate fuel pressure, MAF failure, starter motor fault (need at least 120RPM), cylinder pressure fault.

Have the fuel rail pressure tested along with cylinder pressure.  If the wires are old, replace them along with the plugs.  I've always replaced my wires and plugs every two years, so I know they are in top shape.

These tests/repairs can be done by a local mechanic and should not cost too much.  MAF and other EMS (engine management system) components are expensive and best left to be tested by LR mechanics with Testbook analysis.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
