Land Rover Repair: 99 Disco I - Wont start/stay running, running kind, rovers north

Question
Kind of a whacky problem.... Last August, my car occasionally would not
start. The battery was fine, everything came on but the engine. There was no
sound when the key was turned. Multiple attempts later the car would
eventually start. This happened a few times and then the problem just went
away.
Two weeks ago it started happening again. If I put the car in neutral and
rolled it a bit, it would start. A couple of days ago it shut off while I was
driving it. I was able to roll and restart. However, a few minutes later, it shut
off again then spontaneously restarted, the dash lighting up, chimes,
everything!
Since then I have had trouble starting it, sometimes not even being able to
get the car to respond to the key at all and not letting me shift out of park!
Today was the final straw. Going down the road at 55 mph, it shut off again
and I lost my power steering/brakes. Now it will do nothing, won't come out
of park. I had it towed home.
I know this is long. Could this all just be one problem? Could a bad ignition
switch cause it to turn off? Any ideas of things I can try?

Answer
A failing ignition switch is one possibility, but you may actually have a multiplicity of problems.  It does not sound like you are too comfortable with electrical testing, and that's what's needed next.  Someone is going to have to get the electrical troubleshooting manual (one of the workshop manuals for this truck) and trace and test wiring.

If you want to attempt that, buy a manual from Rovers North or Atlantic British.  If you want to hire a shop, look for referrals in the shop list at www.rangerovers.net
