Land Rover Repair: 2003 Discovery-ABS System, obdii scanner, land rover dealership

Question
Recently the ABS brake light came on, and continued to flash on and off again at least once or twice every time I drove. I had the Land Rover dealership check it out and they told me the ABS modulator needs to be replaced. They gave me a quote of over $2500 for parts and labor, which for me, as a student, I totally can't afford. I have another mechanic who is much more reasonable and I would like to find another way to repair the brake system. I like to find discounted parts and have him repair it for me. What should I except to pay or do by taking a more unconventional and cheaper route. Is it even possible? Any help is very very much appreciated!

Answer
You can try to purchase an ABS shuttle valve kit, which is the most common ABS modulator failure, and have the other mechanic rebuild the unit with it.  You could also buy a complete used ABS modulator (we have a number in stock,  as do many other independent Land Rover parts suppliers.  It is a reasonably easy job, but the mechanic who does it must have the right scanner to cancel the codes.  A generic OBDII scanner will not work.
