Land Rover Repair: Brake lights, brake boosters, park position

Question
QUESTION: HI John,

I have a 98 Disco.  Just replaced the Master cylander.  My brake lights wont turn off.  I also replaced most of the bulbs at same time.  Is it likely that the switch beneath the pedal might be bad?  Thoughts?

ANSWER: Hi Pedro,

exactly what I thought: brake switch under pedal must be faulty.  This part is known to fail and can cause the vehicle not to shift out of the park position.  Just having the brake lights on may be a sign that this part is failing.  The part is not expensive and I hope it is the true cause of your Disco's problem.

Best of luck,

QUESTION: Hey John - Thanks.  It turns out the switch is fine (i can press it with my finger and the lights go out)  But the pedal isnt touching it when released it is just shy by 1/4".  I did recently replace my brake booster.  I've seen a few folks post similar problems on rover forums but no solutions.  Perhaps the spacer for the booster is too thick?  Some people glue pennies or some object to the switch to make it taller -  which sounds crazy to me.

Answer
Hi Pedro.

Ahhh, brake booster is causing the problem. I've not had the problem BUT I read quite a few owners have had this and were forced to pull the 'new' booster and install another brand (if possible).  Where did you get this booster,   British Pacific?  TRW booster seems to be ok.

Don't go with the glued penny trick.
