Land Rover Repair: 96 Discovery, throttle position sensor, maf sensor

Question
Read your lulu bogs down and need to know what "TPS" in your answer stands for.  My symptoms are exactly the same and I am ready to replace the mass air filter but still need to consider alternatives such as the "TPS"

Answer
Hi Joan,

TPS - Throttle Position Sensor

If you are having irradic engine idles, stalls, the engine revving way beyond normal, won't hold steady at any rpm, you may very well have a TPS problem.  I would think it is more common than the MAF sensor failing, especially on our older Disco's.

The TPS cost to repair is much less than MAF (part and labour) so it may be a way to go.  Ask your mechanic to temporarily swap in a TPS to see if it solves your problem.  If it works, pay for the part.  If it does not, move on to the next possible cause and you don't have to pay for a TPS that was not faulty.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
