Land Rover Repair: 3 land rover discovery lighting questions, rear fog lights, land rover discovery

Question
Hello...I recently bought a 1998 Land Rover Discovery.  In the specs for the vehicle, it states that the disco has rear fog lights, and an illuminated ashtray.  Could you tell me which bulbs of the rear tail sets are the fog lights?  Also, we cannot locate the ashtray light.  One more question...should the sunroof switches (between the visors) be illuminated.  Just trying to get everything in working order!! Thank you!

Answer
Hi Jodi,

as a new owner make sure you understand how to operate the rear fog lights:

Press (switch) to operate, press a second time to switch off. The rear fog guard lights will ONLY operate when the headlights (or front fog lights) are switched on, together with the starter switch turned to position ’II’ and extinguish when the headlights are switched off.

Switching off the headlights (or front fog lights) or turning the starter switch to position ’0’, will automatically extinguish the rear fog guard lights. ALWAYS remember to switch the rear fog lights off as soon as visibility is clear.

With this in mind, turn your ignition key to position II (or start your engine), then turn on your headlights THEN turn on your rear fog lights.

Exit the Disco and you'll see which lights are on.  You can have someone press the brake pedal (or open/close the foglights) to see the difference.

My ashtray does not have a light and I did not know they were illuminated.  Maybe from the bulb behind the dual climate controls?  Cigar lighter yes, ashtray not that I know of.  As for sunroof, no they don't light up.  Wish they did.

Best of luck with your 98 Disco.
