Land Rover Repair: 97 Discovery Wont Shift, light fuse, central shaft

Question
My 1997 LR Discovery won't shift out of park.  My anti-lock brake light came on earlier in the day.  Any thoughts?

Answer
Hi Tim,

it could be one of several causes:
your brake pedal switch that is faulted;
your automatic transmission inhibitor switch is faulted;
your gear selection linkage needs adjustment;
rear brake bulbholders are fused (due to corrosion) and is shorting out the brake light fuse.

Also, an owner of a 98 Disco wrote:

The retainer clip that holds the gear select shaft had broken and when I pushed the button on the gear select shifter nothing was happening. I was able to replace the clip for 20 cents. Remove the top of the shift lever to reveal the mechanicsm and until you find the clip you would be able to disengage the gear select locking mechanism by pulling on the central shaft directly.

I hope this helps.
