can you take out the air bags and fit springs instead?  ?? and do away with the air suspension?  Do standard rr springs fit?

Yes, it is possible.  You need a conversion kit, or spring adapters and springs.  There are several companies that supply them.  

I don't condone castrating a Range Rover, you would be losing one of the mos distinctive features.  Repair is possible and economical.
