-----Question-----
John i have read many of your articles on slipped engine liners overheating etc,of the 4.0 liter v8 engine ,i have such a suspect liner on number 6 cylinder .Yes the old pressurizing of the coolant tank and the disappearing coolant. also after taking the heads off the top of the piston was clean and free of carbon .The was no noticeable  sign of the liner having moved .i got the heads checked, for cracks they were ck ,and the gaskets looked fine with no noticeable sign of coolant tracking. Now i am in the process of taking the rest of the engine out of the car and having the block pressure tested. Now this is where the problem begins, one repairer says if the liner has moved i only need to replace it .another says i should replace cylinder 6  and 8 as the water jacket runs behind the back 2 cylinders and as sure as night follows day cylinder 8 will go soon. And yet another says i should replace all of them.also he will not warranty the work as if the water is getting to the liner i must have a cracked block?????John this is a common fault with this type motor and relining with top hat liners is the fix ,do you think i will have further problems if i don't replace all.and do you think that this would be the way to go. also i was told that the block if cracked may leak water into the oil.[the oil is uncontaminated at this point]what is you advice.

Usually with situations like yours we find cracks in the block behind the liner.  The cure is to pull the liners from that side, weld and grind any cracks, then fit new liners and bore them to match your pistons.

It's probably a $1500-2500 repair but it's still less than a block.

That's not really a slipped liner.  It's a problem with the aluminum block.

$2000 is a suspiciously cheap price for a new block.  It should work but make sure of what you are getting.

We weld the old blocks successfully all the time.  But there are no guarantees - your may or may not work.  Our success rate is very high, though

Answer
There are three different Land Rover engines - 14cux, GEMS, and Bosch.  The names refer to the engine management system fitted.  The different motors have similar blocks but there are subtle differences in the crank pulley end, the fitment or absence of crank sensors, and flywheel and oil fittings.

You can adapt any block to any engine management but check carefully
