it is 2001, according to some people in ebay, I should be able to program it myself

I don't understand to well.  What year is your Audi?  
The Audi dealership may need to do the programming for you as a security precaution.

I called an Audi dealership in the USA this morning and they said that "additional keyless entry devices need to have it's 'firmware' programmed to match the characteristics of that type of vehicle at the dealership, or it won't unlock the vehicle."


Perhaps you have a different brand of entry device (non-Audi), that may allow you to program it.

Where are you located?  If you can send me a picture of the device, I can research further for you.
