Land Rover Repair: 2002 Freelander Electrical Short?, fuse tester, flasher relay

Question
I have a 2002 Freelander and there is an electrical problem when I try to use the turn signals. The Lower part of the dash dims and nothing flashes. The flasher relay is clicking slowly but nothing happens. All the exterior light work. Any suggestions?

Answer
Hi Rene,

you will have to test out the fuses within your vehicle.  Purchase a fuse tester (about $2 or so) and then test each fuse, replacing any that are suspect or burnt out.

As you suspect, typically an electrical short somewhere is triggering this problem.  Make sure ALL exterior and interior lights are functioning.  Have someone verify that your brake lights are working when you press the brake pedal.  Open each door to ensure the electrics are good.

It's rare that a dashlight burns out but remotely possible.  I still think it has to be an electrical fault somewhere in the electrical series.

There is a flasher unit relay within the Passenger compartment fusebox.  I wish this webservice allowed graphic uploads...a picture is worth a thousand words!

To describe the relay...it is the last relay in the row.  There are six (six) of them beside each other.  The other five (5) are square, the last one (the flasher relay) is smaller and rectangular.  I hope this is the case with your Freelander...it's the best description I have based on the '01 model.  Should apply to you.

I hope all of this helps,

JohnMc
