Land Rover Repair: 2001 Discovery II Cup Holder Repair, spring tension, metal spring

Question
My rear cup holder gets stuck in the center console. It is supposed to pop out when you push on it.  I can manually pull it out and even remove the plastic cupholder part.  There is also a metal spring but I am not sure where it is supposed to go.  Any ideas?

Answer
Hi Mike,

I believe it's almost like the console facia holder.  That metal spring is in tension against the holder. When you push forward to unlock the cupholder, the wire spring tension is released and out shoots the cupholder.

To repair this, you'll have to move the cupholder completely forward and examine where the metal piece fits.  I'm almost sure it must clip in up under the holder and you should see some wear marks made from the forward end of the piece (which is probably left free for movement).  I could not find some documentation on this so I'm writing from experiences with my fascia cupholder.

You need to slide two thin shims in each side. About 1/2" wide .06 thick, only needs to be about 3" long. There are two clips that snap into a recess. By pressing the shims in it will force the clips out of the recess and allow you to slide out the old cup holder.

(Thanks Peter)

I hope this helps,
