Land Rover Repair: 2001 Disc II engine starting problem, starter solenoid, external power source

Question
Hi John.  The battery in my Discovery went dead today after the hazards were left on too long.  Attempts to get a jump from a mechanic's service vehicle failed.  There is a clicking sound when I turn the key in the ignition, but the engine does not start.  I have never had electrical problems with this car.  Also, all lights, windows, etc. work when the car is connected to the external power source. Any thoughts?

Answer
Hi Jennifer,

it could be the starter or starter solenoid.  If you only get a click sound with a FULLY CHARGED battery, it's almost always the starter.

In some cases, your battery could be very dead and perhaps the boost that you are getting does not have a good enough ground connection.

SO...before you rush off to pay $700(plus labour & taxes) for a dealer starter, make sure your battery is fully charged (deep cycle) OR temporary install a new fully charged battery to determine if it's your battery OR the starter.

Best of luck,

NB:  a salvaged starter could cost you as low as $50 - check out www.car-part.com for a salvage yard nearest you.
Make sure they bench test before you buy.
