Land Rover Repair: 1996 4.0l Discovery liner?, cylinder liners, info thanks

Question
Mr.Robison;
I have read with interest your information on droped cylinder liners.. if an engine is ticking but hasn't totally failed, is it possible to remove the oil pan, drill some holes (horizontally) into the liners and block and "pin" them in place? I'd swear i heard of some Australians doing this but can't find the info....
Thanks;
Dave

Answer
Dave, I have read of people pinning the liners but I've never seen it work.  When people pin liners they have a stripped block and they drill in from the side and insert a screw.  Then they cut it off in the bore and grind it smooth.

There's no way for you to grind it smooth, so the screw end would foul the piston.

We don't do that anyway.  When we fix liner trouble we use a liner with a flange on top.  The flange prevents it from dropping with no drilling of pinning

Good luck,
