Land Rover Repair: 94 Disco Transmission/Cooling overheating, coolant system, tranny oil

Question
Disco 94 3.9 V8I
Recently had new water pump installed after car started to overheat--run fine for 6wks over 1000km still drives well but now I can hear noise like water dribbling or leaking and "Transmission Overheating" light comes on after driving for 5min.

Advice prior to parting with $$$$$$$.

Cheers

Answer
Hi Wayne,

that 'waterfall' sound you hear may actually be an air blockage in your heater core.  The "Transmission Overheating" message tells me that the radiator may also be blocked.

You should have your radiator pressure tested by a local rad specialist.  It may all be related to a fouled radiator - even the water sounds you hear.

The tranny oil is circulated into the radiator (separate tubes of course) and if the rad is not cooling properly, naturally, your tranny oil will remain hot.  Add to this the overheating engine and you have a problem.

My advice is to resolve this problem quickly.  Nothing ruins a LR engine (and tranny in your case) faster than excessive heat.  If one of your cylinder sleeve's drops (which can happen under extreme heat), you engine is ruined and you're looking for a new engine.  No fix for dropped sleeves.  This is a known problem with LR engines, so don't delay.

Most rad shops can replace your radiator. They'll be able to pressure test your coolant system too!  Two years ago, I bought a rebuilt radiator from a local shop for $500 installed. My '95 has run well ever since.  Should last me another 10 years (if I'm lucky).  In fact, the new rad was even better than the original.  Technology changed since our Disco's first came onto the road!

Best of luck,

JohnMc
