Land Rover Repair: Will not come out of parking gear (Follow-up), land rover discovery, differential lock

Question
JohnMc,
Thanks a million for the help.  This evening I checked my fuses out and found that fuse #25 (15 amp, Brake lights, Reverse lights) is burnt out.  After replacing the fuse the vehicle was fine until I shifted to reverse and the fuse blew out again, but if I went pass reverse (automatic transmission) to any other gears the fuse would remain OK.  If I went back to reverse the fuse would burn out again and I would be unable to switch gears.  I hope this info helps.

Respectfully,
Julio

-----Question-----
I have a 2001 Land Rover Discovery II SE, I started my car this morning (it did start with no problems) and it would not come out of the parking gear.  There is a light that comes on “DIFFERENTIAL LOCK – RED” and a beep sound (indicter) comes on.  I called the dealership this morning and they stated that this year vehicle does not have a Differential lock on it.

Hi Julio,

sounds like your park neutral switch may be at fault.  That chime may be the one associated to your transfer gearbox.  In your owner's manual you'll find:

Transfer box reminder
A warning will chime continuously while the
transfer gearbox is in neutral.

I've heard that series II Disco's have trouble with this switch.  The park/neutral switch can malfunction for various reasons, one being water the other being oil contamination.  May also be subject to corrosion...like anything else.  FIX:  probably replace the switch.

As for your Diff lock, again your owner's manual clearly states that there is a diff lock.  So what was that dealer thinking (besides how to get into your wallet)?

The manauls says:

Differential lock - RED
Illuminates whenever the differential is locked.
While carrying out maintenance operations on your vehicle, it may be necessary for the dealer to lock the differential between the front and rear axles. This will cause the warning light to illuminate.
The dealer should always unlock the differential before returning the vehicle to the owner.
However, if the light illuminates when the starter switch is turned on, this indicates that this has not been done. The vehicle should not be driven in this condition because ABS performance will be impaired and Traction Control will be disabled. Contact your dealer immediately and ask for the differential to be unlocked.

Clearly, there's a problem with the electronic transmission or TG (transfer gearbox). I suspect the park/neutral switch but this diff lock light makes it complicated.  Could it be the Manual mode switch?

On my '95 Disco, I have a manual diff lock.  When engaged, I can drive it but not over 50km/h.  It's meant for off-roading in extreme conditions.  Sounds like the dealer has to disengage this with their testbook diagnostic tool.

Best of luck,

JohnMc

Hi Julio,

Just out of curiosity, check the rear brake light bulbholders (reverse light bulbholder too) for any signs of corrosion.  Remove the bulb and look into the socket...sometimes the corrosion is so bad that there are no terminals visible.  Could this simple of a problem.

Elsewise, it could be your electronic transmission and this is best left to the experts to service and repair.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
