Land Rover Repair: Front Driveshaft busted my transmission, cast aluminum, propshaft

Question
Hi.

the Hookes Joint on the front propshaft of my Disco2 sheared yesterday while I was accelerating. it took me a few hundred feet to slow down and the inertia of the rotating driveshaft chunked the cast aluminum housing of my transmission.

have you ever heard of this piece breaking? my FSM says it's sealed&lubed at the factory, and should never need maintenence.

secondly, if I pickup a tranny elsewhere (carcannibal or somewhere), will a shop drop it in for me? what is the typical cost of a R&R on tranny?

thanks.

Answer
I have written several warnings about the joint breaking and damaging the geaqrbox.  In many cases I have seen insurance companies cover damage like you describe.  I depends upon your policy and the skill of the repair shop.

I can't tell you what another shop's policy would be about installing a transmission you procure.  Many shops will not install owner-supplied parts but that's between you and them.

The repair is probably 8-10 hours of labor.
