Land Rover Repair: 2000 Disco - difficult start and rough running when engine is cold, mass air flow sensor, mass air flow

Question
I tried to send this message this morning, but I think I accidently deleated it, so please forgive me if this is a duplicate.  I live in Georgia with relatively mild winters.  Last winter, when I started my LR Discovery II in the morning it would not allow me to even press down the accelerator for a least a full minute.  It would not move at all.  After about a minute, I could press it and it would drive fine.  For the past few months, when I have started the car in the morning, I can press the accelerator, but the car makes a popping, sputtering sound, and will only go about 2 mph for at least a mile or so.  Then finally is will drive "normal".  Any idea what is causing this, how it can be repaired, and an estimated cost?  Thanks for your help!

Answer
Hi Kelly,

hard to say. Could be poor ignition spark, old wires and spark plugs in need of change.  Could be fuel feed is poor or injectors are fouled.  Could be air to fuel mix ratio is poor, thus poor ignition.  It could be the mass air flow sensor or some other sensor not reporting properly and thus throwing off the ignition.

Some of these things are not too expensive and can be done at local garages, while others require LR expertise.

My suggestion would be to have your local LR mechanic connect your Disco to a testbook (engine analyzer) and see if they can isolate the problem.  It would be faster and could save you some money.  Otherwise, you could be swapping out parts in a blind guess at the fix.

Worst case, you can say no thanks to the dealer, pay the hour of labour and take the Disco to some local mechanic to perform the work.  Just be careful with this as local shops often don't know very much about LR's.

Best of luck,

JohnMc

NB: at first I thought it was the exhaust valves that are sticking but this usually happens when the Disco is fully warmed up.
