Land Rover Repair: 2001 LR Discovery II Limp mode, gods green earth, mode sensors

Question
Dear sir,
Ive been recently having problems with my Disco II's mode sensors or transmission computer, not quite sure, could even be a switch. The dash flashes Manual and sport along with check engine light illuminated. It proceeds to then drive only in what seems to be 3rd gear, or a limp mode of some sort almost as if I am in a lower gear. This happens intermittently and is usually fixed by turning the engine off, and back on thus I assume resetting the computer. No one in Gods green earth will even touch it except the dealership, and they want up to 1600 dollars and my left testicle for payment. Unfortunately I have no warranty. I was just curious if you had any sort of advice or alternate service options that you would share with me before I go ahead and take my lashes from dealer and get it over with.I just got the vehicle and am delighted with it except for the little 1600 bucks thing. It just seems that there should be a simpler solution. I really appreciate your time.
                      Sincerely,
                         Geno Picardi

Answer
Your transmission is electronically controlled and can only be tested by a shop with an Autologic or t4 (dealer) test system.  You might try looking on www.rangerovers.net for an independent shop near you, or you might try calling other dealers.

There is no home test or solution to your problem.

I have seen problems like yours caused by wiring, transmission controllers, or issues within the transmission.
