Land Rover Repair: Trouble Codes & 4-Low, penetrating oil, exhaust valves

Question
Hi,
I am considering the purchase of a 1998 Disco w/ 73K miles. It has a few issues, such as misfiring and I think those will be taken care of with relative ease.

My question is this...what would cause the shifter to stick in 4-high? I cannot seem to get it to budge. Is this symtomatic of bigger issues?

Thanks,

Answer
Don't be so quick to assume misfiring is "relatively easy to fix" as you imply.  There are problems with these engines getting carbon fouling of the exhaust valves, and the resultant intermittent misfire can run $2500 or more to repair.

The transfer case is probably stuck because the linkage has never been moved and it's rusted tight.  It could take a few hours with penetrating oil to free it up

Good luck,
