Land Rover Repair: 88 Range, range rover classic, winter thanks

Question
I have a 1988 Range Rover Classic with a 3.5 with an idle problem. When you start the truck when cold it starts great and idles fine in park. When you put this truck in R or D it dies almost instantly, if I mess with the gas pedal I can force it to run most of the time. When the truck is warm it gets pretty hard to start let alone keep running.I don't know if it helps but the truck on has 89,xxx miles. This is a great truck and started this after sitting for a few weeks and I would love to have it running good before winter. Thanks for your help.

Answer
I suggest you call Rovers North, 802 879 0032 and buy a factory workshop manual for your truck.  They have a step by step procedure to set the base idle and test the idle speed control.

From what you are describing you either have a very dirty throttle body (clean it!) or the base idle is set wrong, or the idle speed control isn't working.

You can do all the work with a multimeter and common hand tools.

Hope this helps.
