Land Rover Repair: 96 Disco engine knock at idle, torque converter, engine knock

Question
I have a 96 Disco 300 auto, mileage unknown as it is not the original engine, I recently replaced the Turbo boost pipe (pipe from turbo to tube leading to intercooler) and tightned the kickdown cable as it wouldn't go over 3000 rpm before changing up, even on full thottle. now about a week later a really loud knocking has started, this is very noticable on tickover, but can be heard a bit even when reving the engine, occasionally this sound will die down for a few seconds although will not go away completly

Answer
Hi Ian,

this kind of problem is difficult to assess.  Do you have a stethescope? I ask this because you have to determine where the noise is coming from.

Sometimes a catayltic convertor failure can sound like an engine noise.

Also, there is a plate that is attached to the flywheel that has been known to come loose due to the torque converter.  There is an inspection plate used to view the flywheel. If you turn the flywheel slowly, you could listen for any abnormalities.

I am leaning more towards a cat problem as a flywheel fault usually has a steady noise that increases with speed.

Best of luck,
