Land Rover Repair: 96 Disco. Turns over, wont start., inertia switch, starter solenoid

Question
My LR turns over but won't start.  Possible causes:  It has been really rainy and it is wet under the dash on the drivers side--also, my wife may have run it dangerously close to empty.  Seems like the alarm system is not letting start--Ive had such problems but it just wouldn't turn over, now it turns over strong.  Fuel? or Alarm? or both?  I've read another answer of yours, and you mention a switch behind the engine in regards to the fuel, I haven't found it, could you describe it for me.  Thanks.

Answer
Hi Cullen,

just a guess, but if your older Disco has been exposed to heavy rains, it's possible that the solenoid main lead is not getting enough 'juice' - amps - as needed.  Maybe it's corroding, soaked in oil and grime, even wet.  All can contribute to reducing the amperage your starter solenoid needs.  I've seen this on my '95.  To correct this. I clipped off a 3 inch section of the wire and attached a new one, same gauge.  Disco starter right away.

The Fuel Inertia Switch is located on the bulkhead of the engine department, just behind the engine.  It looks like a electronic button that has been clamped to the firewall of the engine compartment.  May have a rubber cover.   You press the button from the top.

In the event of an accident, this switch is activated and cuts off fuel.  To deactivate it, it has to be pressed.

Another possible cause could be your EGR valve (on the manifold) or the fuel relay (engine compartment fuse box).

IF you've been having starting problems for some time, I'd first start with the solenoid and the main lead wire to the solenoid.  Try by-passing the wire with one directly to the battery.  You'll have to use your ignition key but just don't turn the engine over (goto position II with the key).

Best of luck,

IF the by-pass mentioned above does not work then you are looking at ignition switch or fuel feed.
